About Azov-Syvash National Nature Park

Azov-Syvash National Nature Park encompasses diverse habitats including shallow saline lagoons, coastal salt marshes, reed beds, sandy spits, and steppe landscapes along the northern coasts of the Sea of Azov and the Syvash lagoons in southern Ukraine’s Kherson Oblast. Established in 1993, the park aims to conserve the rich biodiversity and fragile ecosystems of this transitory zone between sea and land. The Syvash lagoon complex is known for its extremely high salinity, creating a unique environment supporting specialized halophytic vegetation and salt-loving invertebrates. These wetlands are of international importance as a stopover and breeding ground for numerous waterfowl, including flamingos, herons, swans, and a variety of migratory shorebirds, making it a premier destination for ornithologists and photographers. The park’s coastal dunes and steppe areas harbor rare and endemic plant species adapted to harsh saline conditions. Visitors can enjoy birdwatching towers, guided wildlife tours, and quiet hikes along the shores or through the protected reed beds. While recreational infrastructure is limited, the park offers a deeply immersive experience in a remote, largely undeveloped natural setting. Access is typically by nearby towns and small roads, and the best time to visit is during spring and autumn migrations. The park also plays an important ecological role as part of the larger Azov Sea biosphere, emphasizing conservation of unique saline ecosystems under pressure from human activities and climate change.
